It’s November and nature
is full of glad death, defiantly
brown and knowing what life is.

I mentioned the other day that I lot of the pieces I'd written recently were about death. But what I forgot to mention was that contemplating mortality isn't a bad thing! Indeed, perhaps we ought to spend our lives learning how to die. To do this, we could learn from the rest of nature. It's November and death is everywhere. But nature knows that come spring, life comes from death. Nature lives on. While each flower and each leaf is dead, the whole of which they are part is very much alive.

Be so stillyou hearthe beech leavestell storiesof their lifeclinging in death. Sometimes when I'm out for a walk on a winter's day, it's so still I can hear the snow squeak. So when there's a breeze and the beech leaves rustle, it's a rude shock. The beech trees around here keep their dead, bronzed leaves all winter. I don't know why they do that, but they're a reminder that nature is beautiful, even in death. Indeed, perhaps for nature, death is beautiful too. My 2023 Black Friday Sale...
